The Ngabu region of Malawi’s Nsanje District sits above ancient Jurassic basalts of the Karoo Supergroup — volcanic rock formed over 180 million years ago. As groundwater moved through the basalt, silica slowly crystallised inside gas cavities, building the fortification bands, chalcedony zones, and plume inclusions that define Malawi agate.

We source directly from this region. No middlemen, no mixed origins.

What makes Malawi agate different

Malawi agate — sometimes called candy agate — is prized for its vivid colour range and tight fortification banding. When cut and polished, these nodules reveal oranges, yellows, pinks, reds, blues, purples, and cream — often in the same stone. The translucent chalcedony zones glow when backlit. Occasional mossy or plume inclusions add character that no two stones share.

The material from the Ngabu region includes several natural varieties — Alimajo, Gambiri, smooth skin, and newer material from the Mozambique border regions. Each lot is a genuine mixture; the varieties are not always easy to distinguish before cutting, and we don’t sort by type. What you receive reflects the natural range of the deposit.

Each 500g lot contains a mixed selection of nodules from 2cm to 8cm. Most are completely closed — every cut is a small reveal. We hand-sort before packing to remove obvious poor-quality material, but as with all rough agate, results vary. What you receive is honest, direct-from-source rough.

Every nodule we sell passes through our hands in South Africa before it reaches yours. We dispatch from South Africa, with estimated delivery of 7–10 working days. International buyers should note that import duties or VAT may apply depending on destination.
