Sourced directly from the Ngabu region of Malawi's Nsanje District, these rough agate nodules form in the ancient Jurassic basalts of the Karoo Supergroup — volcanic rock laid down over 180 million years ago. Silica-rich groundwater slowly filled the cavities, layer by layer, building the fortification bands, translucent chalcedony zones, and occasional mossy or plume-like inclusions that make Malawi agate so sought after.
The material includes several natural varieties — Alimajo, Gambiri, smooth skin, and newer material from the Mozambique border regions. Each 500g lot is a genuine mixture; the varieties are not always easy to distinguish before cutting, and we don't sort by type. What you receive reflects the natural range of the deposit.
