Cactus Quartz cluster from Boekenhouthoek, Mpumalanga, South Africa, the only known locality in the world where this formation occurs. This specimen has pale lavender amethyst crystals with deeper purple phantom outlines, drusy overgrowths around the crystal sides.
Cactus Quartz, also known as Spirit Quartz, is macrocrystalline quartz in which the central crystals are encrusted with a second generation of smaller, drusy crystal terminations. These grow across the prism faces, creating the distinctive spiny, cactus-like habit while leaving the larger terminations visible.
