Malachite polished freeform from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with concentric rings and flowing bands in alternating light and deep greens.

Malachite is a copper-based mineral that occurs in forms ranging from botryoidal and silky fibrous growths to stalactitic formations. It typically grows as tightly clustered fans of fibrous crystals that form a seemingly solid mass. As successive layers build during formation, banded patterns develop, producing the rings in different shades of green revealed in polished specimens.

Malachite forms through the weathering of other copper ores and is often associated with copper minerals such as azurite and chrysocolla. It occurs in copper deposits worldwide, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo being the primary source for polished malachite and mineral specimens.
